Concussions are a common injury seen in athletes who compete in contact and/or collision sports. The signs of concussion are not always well recognized and because of that, teens may put themselves at risk for another injury. The league has maintained, despite widespread criticism, that it was safe to allow players to return to the field as soon as their symptoms were gone — even in the same game in which the injury occurred.
Repeated concussions or a severe concussion may require surgery or lead to long-lasting problems with movement, learning, or speaking. Concussions happen when the soft tissues of the brain are forced against the bone of the skull. Sometimes the severity of the damage is not known immediately.
